This thesis represents a theoretical-and-experimental study on the issue of forming grammar competency of the 10th graders by means of project-based method in the process of teaching the Ukrainian language. In the thesis the content of the concepts “grammar competency” and “project-based method” is construed; the psycholinguistic and linguodidactic foundations are substantiated, methods for forming grammar competency of the 10th graders by means of the project-based method in the process of teaching Ukrainian are elaborated, psychological-and-pedagogic foundations for forming grammar competency of senior pupils by means of project-based method are defined; forms, methods, procedures of teaching the Ukrainian language to senior pupils are improved and the model of formation grammar competency of pupils by means of project-based methods is presented; linguodidactic conditions for forming grammar competency of the 10th graders at the Ukrainian lessons are further developed. Grammar competency is deemed to be the crucial factor for forming the pupils’ oral and written standards; consistent knowledge of grammatical units, grammatical categories, grammatical notions, coherent system of interrelations between among the units and the respective stylistic functions; the sufficient level of formation of grammar skills, the linguistic experience of application of grammatical units in various communicative situations, formed values and attitudes; the level of formation of grammar competency of the 10th graders is defined. The development of experimental teaching program based on the assumption that the activities aimed at forming grammar competency of the 10th graders by means of the project-based method in the process of teaching the Ukrainian language are deemed to be effective subject to the following conditions: consideration of cognitive, communicative and linguodidactic potential of project-based methods, which enhance the senior students’ interactive activities, their need for communication, thus bringing the modelled framework of educational communication to the natural one; support for functioning of interactive teaching methods aiming at generalization, systematization of the pupils’ communicatively significant skills and formation of their grammar competence. Projecting directs the learning process to independent activities and the method of project activities or the project-based method enables their activization. This method is deemed to be “universal” since it could synthesize problem-based, research and retrieval teaching methods. The project-based method, unlike the conventional ones, should not envisage identical instructions and directions concerning common activities of the class. Its primary aim lies in creating a special developmental environment able to provide decisive motivation for the pupils’ learning activities; implementing interactive activities at all stages of the educational process; forming skills of both independent and cooperative work on the basis of research activities; “success situation”. The results of the experiment confirmed the effectiveness of the suggested methodology for forming grammar competency of the 10th graders by means of project-based methods.
