Essay

The thesis is devoted to the analysis of formation process and development history of Ukrainian forestry terminology, as well as its system-structural organization. It determines the fundamental theoretical provisions and methodical principles of UFT research and heavily focuses on general concepts of modern terminology studies, which are extensively used in the paper. The paper describes the composition of Ukrainian forestry terminology, which includes the names denoting the concepts of forestry as a branch of science. The paper traces a close connection of forestry terminology with the terminology of other forestry sciences. It is concluded that these names most often have hypero-hyponymic relationships; thus, they cannot be entirely consistent. The Ukrainian forestry terminology is directly influenced by development tendencies in general vocabulary and term systems of other branches. There are three periods of UFT development. Modern forestry terminology is a clearly structured and organised system of terms. The terminology field, which includes the core and the periphery, is an important means of UFT systemic organization. The research has examined the thematic classification of forestry terms and analysed the composition of thematic groups (subgroups, micro-groups). Additionally, it has traced and characterized hypero-hyponymic, synonymic and antonymic relations between UFT terms and has studied the phenomena of polysemy and homonymy in the system of Ukrainian forestry terms. According to their structural characteristics, Ukrainian forestry terms have been divided into two types, namely synthetic and analytical ones.
