Essay

Object: the art cinema as a sociocultural phenomenon. Purpose: to conceptualize the art cinema as a sociocultural phenomenon. Research methods: analysis, synthesis, terminological analysis, generalization, comparison, secondary data analysis, comparative-historical method, questionnaire. Theoretical and practical results: the main determinants of the request for art cinema by the audience were identified: the individual, the institutional as well as socio-cultural factors; the main themes of arthouse films that have been released into the Ukrainian cinema rental during the last 5 years have been identified; the social portraits of the audience of mass and art-house cinema were described. Novelty: the development of conceptual bases for the study of art cinema as a socio-cultural phenomenon. Degree of implementation: the study results contributed to the improvement of such training courses as “Cinema Studies”, “Media art”, “Methods of Media Research”, within the framework of the Master’s course “Journalism” (educational and professional program “Media Communications”) at the Faculty of Sociology of V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University.
