Dovgal E. Pharmacognostic study of Narrow-leaved cattail (Typha angustifolia L.)

The thesis is devoted to the complex phytochemical study of narrow-leaved cattail leaves, fruit, rhizomes and roots, as well as obtaining medicinal herbal remedies, working out quality control methods for the medicinal plant material and medicinal herbal remedies. Using chemical reactions, as well as chromatographic methods of analysis, the presence of polysaccharides, carboxylic acids, phenolic compounds and terpenoids was determined. The quantitative content of the major groups of biologically active compounds in the objects of study was determined gravimetrically, titrimetrically and spectrophotometrically. After having carried out screening for the antimicrobial activity, 70% ethanol tinctures of narrow-leaved cattail leaves and rhizomes, as well as the thick extracts of narrow-leaved cattail leaves and rhizomes were found to be the most prospective. The projects of quality control methods for the chosen herbal remedies were worked out. The thick extract of narrow-leaved cattail leaves was determined to possess expressed anti-inflammatory activity.
