Essay

This thesis closely examines for the first time silence in poetry from philosophical, psychological and linguistic perspectives using the material of Ukrainian poetry of the second half of the 20th century. It analyzes the influence of the totalitarian state on the functioning of poetic language. The result of such influence is alienation of language, its loss of meaning and poetic ability, and distrust in its veracity. These aspects are illustrated on the basis of works of Ukrainian poet Hryhoriy Chubai. His poetry demonstrates the strive of totalitarian power to control the world through naming, this way defending from the unknown. This work demonstrates the connection of the poetry of Hryhoriy Chubai to the tradition of European modernism, especially tothe works of T.S. Eliot. Through this comparative analysis, as well as religious studies of Mircea Eliade and philosophical views of C. Jung the thesis demonstrates the ontological layer of Hryhoriy Chubai`s poetry, which are tales of recovering the Word in the world of dead language, and the experience of death and resurrection.
