The research paper investigates the problem of the English language lexico-grammatical competence formation in reading for future civil engineers with the help of the sketch construction project as a verbal-visual complex. The notion «the English language lexico-grammatical competence for future civil engineers in reading» has been defined precisely. Its content has been characterized. The concept of the English language lexico-grammatical competence formation of future civil engineers has been defined as the language capability of professionally oriented texts, in particular, sketch construction project, which is based on the complex and dynamic interaction of lexical, grammatical knowledge, skills in correlation with subject knowledge (including paralinguistic) knowledge and skills and language awareness, which promotes the successful realization of design-constructing activity of a civil engineer in the English-speaking professional environment. Didactic-methodological peculiarities of lexico-grammatical competence for future civil engineers in reading have been determined: taking into account the statements of communicative-cognitive approach; concentration on principles: integrated learning, systemacity, functionality, information transfer, unity of learning, education and development, authenticity, problematicity, reflection, improvement of educational process by the engagement of students into the usage of metacognitive and cognitive strategies. The linguistic analysis of the sketch construction project has been done. The criteria of educational material’s choice have been improved. The stages of the English language lexico-grammatical competence formation of future civil engineers have been substantiated: oriented-preparatory stage is directed at the acquaintance with the new language material; stereotype-situated stage which is aimed at the formation of receptive lexico-grammatical skills on the level of word, word combination, sentence; variative-situated stage is directed at the formation of lexico-grammatical skills on the level of unity; final stage where the integrated development of speech reading skills is done.
