Essay

In the dissertation, for the first time in the Ukrainian linguistics, the theoretical principles of the formal and semantic variability of terms are investigated and the specificity of the functioning of variational phenomena in the syntactic terminology system is revealed. Actuality of proposed study is due to necessity of a comprehensive study of the current condition of syntactic terminology, including clarification of the features of display the variant phenomena. The history of the development of variology, in general, is analyzed. The meta-language of the modern theory of variability is refined and ordered, the volume of its basic notions (variantology, variance, variant, synonym, doublet) is revised, i. e. the necessity for a thorough differentiation of forming stems in the creation of new words is stressed. The essence of the categories of identity and proximity / differences, which are the basis for distinguishing between formal and semantic variability, is determined. Also, to distinguish units with identical and close content, the notion of “shade of meaning” or “semantic distance” is used. The entire semantic coincidence is considered as an identity, and incomplete coincidence – as proximity, similarity. In this regard, the basic rules which have led to the need to form a typology of terminological variants, combining traditional and functional approaches, are defined. Terminological variability is studied as the unity of formal and semantic modifications.
