Essay

The thesis is the first comprehensive study of the language personality of a modern Ukrainian civil servant in a professional discourse on the basis of questionnaires, observations and interviews. A collective language personality of a civil servant has been comprehensively studied for the first time in Ukrainian linguistics, which justifies the methodology of such research, characterizes the features of linguistic behaviour and analyses the language preferences of civil servants and local government officials, which are also covered by the Law of Ukraine "On Civil Service", the jargon of officialdom is considered as a typical linguistic deviation of civil servants, the peculiarities of cognitive world perception of civil servants are compared with other professional groups – employees of libraries with and without higher education. It has been found out that the optimal methods of studying the language personality of a civil servant in macro sociological linguistic studies are sociological (surveys, interviews, observations) and psycholinguistic (free associative experiments) for the collection of material, as well as general scientific, mathematical and linguistic and stylistic methods, methods of communicative linguistics and discourse study for working out the collected materials. The language preferences and language behaviour of civil servants of Kyiv and Poltava region in the professional oral and written communication have been analysed. It has been established that an important role in choosing the language of professional communication is played by the service hierarchy, in which the main attention is paid to the language behaviour of the leader. On the basis of the analysis of the letters and own observations, the executive intention in the oral and written communication of civil servants with the citizens of Ukraine has been singled out and characterized.
