Essay

The object of the study is the process of English listening competence development of pre-service teachers. The subject of the study is the methodology of English listening competence development of pre-service teachers by means of contemporary English short stories in audiobook format. The aim of the study is theoretical substantiation, practical development and experimental verification of the methodology of English listening competence development of pre-service teachers by means of fiction audiobooks. At the various stages of scientific research, the following methods have been used: – theoretical: analysis of domestic and foreign scientific literature on methodology, pedagogy, psychology, linguistics, psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics, literary studies, analysis of curricula in order to generalize theoretical and practical aspects concerning the research problem; projecting a model of the educational process using the proposed methodology. – empirical: scientific observation of the educational process, studying teachers’ experience concerning listening instruction at universities, interviewing teachers and students in order to collect empirical material on the use of fiction audiobooks, methods of teaching listening, students’ interests, listening difficulties, etc.; testing for the purpose of determining the level of students’ listening competence development at the pre-experimental and post-experimental evaluation stage; experimental English listening competence development by means of fiction audiobooks in order to test the effectiveness of the developed methodology; – methods of mathematical statistics: for statistical analysis, processing and verification of the reliability of the results of the methodical experiment. The scientific novelty of the work lies in the fact that in it: – the methodology of English listening competence development of pre-service teachers by means of contemporary English short stories in audiobook format has been theoretically substantiated, developed and experimentally tested for the first time. It is aimed at preparing students for autonomous listening of fiction audiobooks, includes three stages of English listening competence development (preparatory, main, final) with corresponding substages, which are implemented in the process of in-class and out-of-class work; a system of exercises, which involves the interconnected development of lexical, articulatory and perception skills, reflexive skills development; cyclic model of English listening competence development of pre-service teachers; – the selection criteria for fiction audiobooks for the purpose of English listening competence development have been improved; – the problem of listening competence development of pre-service teachers and its evaluation has been further researched. The practical significance of the results obtained is: the selection of authentic contemporary English short stories for the listening competence development of pre-service teachers; development of exercises on the basis of fiction audiobooks; a listening diary; methodical recommendations for teachers on listening competence development of pre-service teachers; a training manual (in co-authorship).
