Essay

The thesis is devoted to study of the genre and stylistic features peculiar to the collected novels written by Yurii Kosach, one of the most talented and in equal measure the most controversial figure in the Ukrainian literature of the 20th century. The thesis author has systematically studied the prose of Yurii Kosach and distinguished the main factors forming the genre and stylistic identity of his novels. There determined a theoretical basis of the scientific inquiry, namely: she has analyzed the main studies in the genre of novel and style, focused our attention on the two way connection between the concepts, determined the genre and stylistic specificity of the writer’s novels, sources and context of his novel thinking. The thesis author has also examined the poetics of historicism in such novels as «Rubicon of Khmelnytskyi» and «Den Hnivu» («The Day of Anger»), depictured the features of historiosophy position of the prosaic, and analyzed the concept of historical literary work developed by Yurii Kosach. The method to express the historicism, as a component of the creative thinking, is determined. The scientific paper is also focused on the features peculiar to the adventurous and suspense dominant present in the novel of «Volodarka of Pontidy» («The Lady of Pontida»).Artistic identity of the philosophical reflection is analyzed in novels «Dyvymosia v Ochi Smerti» («We are Looking at the Eyes of Death»), «Chad» («Fumes»), «Enei i Zhyttia Inshykh» («Aeneas and the Lives of Others»), «Chortivska Skelia» («The Devil’s Cliff»). There conducted analysis of Yurii Kosach’s creative and philosophical thinking in the context of the European and national existentialism. The thesis author concentrates attention on the originality of novels and actualization of essential issues of the 20th centuries, which clearly reflect the epoch of existential emptiness among the Ukrainian emigration. She has interpreted suicidal motives in the novel of «Chad» through the psychoanalysis. The problematical character and difficulty of an emigrant’s existence is presented. There examined the genre of the family chronicle in «Suzirria Lebedia» («Constellation of Swan»). The creative interpretation of a person in the world is analyzed with revealing the role and meaning of images – symbols as well as the ways of their realization. The thesis studies the features peculiar to formation of the prose writer’s individual style. The writer’s creative manner is characterized by a combination of several features of modern currents: the existentialism, the neo romanticism, the neo baroque, the symbolism, the expressionism, the surrealism, the naturalism, the impressionism, etc. It gives the grounds to define the stylistic syncretism as one more sign of the individual creative method of the writer. The defining features of his style are the exoticism, the experimentalism, the «Europeanism», the baroque style, the psychologism, the complexity and multiversity of characters, the intertextuality, the autobiographical style, and the «tragic optimism» (Yu. Sheveliov), immersion in the state of spiritual existential crisis. The thesis author proves that Yurii Kosach has created an original genre variety that includes a historical – suspense novel, a philosophical existential novel, an adventurous novel, a suspense novel, a spy thriller, and an adventurous novel with the elements of sensation, family saga, etc. Analysis of the genre and stylistic features proves that the writer’s legacy includes the modified genre and stylistic form, which permit to realize historiosophy worldview of the writer.
