Zhurkova O. Motivation of Connotative Meaning of English and Ukrainian Phraseological Units: Contrastive Aspect

The thesis focuses on the motivation of connotative meaning of English and Ukrainian phraseological units in the contrastive aspect. In the thesis the content of the notion "connotation" and "connotative meaning" has been clarified; the methodology of comparison of phraseological units with connotative meaning has been evolved; the main components of connotative meaning have been specified; the inner form of the language as a motivated feature of the connotative meaning has been identified; the content of the notion "motivation" and the peculiarities of the types of connotative meaning on the phraseological level have been determined; linguistic and non-linguistic ways of the connotative meaning origin have been researched; cross-language correlation in the units under analysis has been revealed; national specificity and the impact on the understanding of language model of the world of the English and Ukrainian ethnicities has been described.
