Sholia I. The Dynamics of Name Vocabulary of Uzhhorod Citizens in the 20th Century.

The content and dynamics of the name repertoire of the citizens of Uzhhorod in the 20th century has been for the first time analyzed in the thesis. Vast empirical data provided an in-depth research of male and female names in multinational Uzhhorod over a lengthy period – the 20th century. The analysis of 17481 names has been completed: 580 male (9026 persons) and 668 female (8455 persons) names. The data selection method allowed the investigation of the dynamics of the name vocabulary, changes in its content, as well as the frequency of usage of every name over the course of the century. A set of methods of linguistic analysis including descriptive, statistical, contrastive-comparative, comparative-synchronic, and comparative-diachronic approaches has been applied in the thesis. The key method is the descriptive one with its main techniques of inventory and classification of linguistic units (onyms). It explicitly outlines the subject of the study, consistently describes, classifies, systematizes the collected data, describes in detail the system of personal names in Uzhhorod in the 20th century.
