Essay

Based on the analysis of scientific literature, archival materials and normative legal acts the research provides a study of the development of legal education and science in Bukovyna in 1875–2015. It identifies and analyzes the historical periods of the legal institutions activity in Chernivtsi, characterizes its educational and scientific components. It studies up the organization of the research process at the Law depart-ments of the present-day universities of Chernivtsi region. Special attention is paid to the issues of functioning of Chernivtsi financial law school and to the formation of the leading areas of scientific research in the field of jurisprudence in Bukovyna. The research determines the main stages of the formation and development of legal education and science in Bukovyna, namely: the Austrian (1875–1918), the Romanian (1918–1940), the Soviet (1940–1991) and the Ukrainian (1991 – to nowadays) periods. Each historical epoch has contributed to the development of the legal traditions and is characterized by certain features. The first stage was marked by the active formation of the legal education and research activities in Bukovyna, when the Austrian authorities established the Law department in Chernivtsi University (1875). World-famous scientists, such as: E. Ehrlich, H. Gross and J. A. Schumpeter were involved in the scientific estab-lishment of legal tradition in Bukovyna at that time. The second stage is characterized by total Romanization of all spheres of life in the region, by neglecting everything that was Ukrainian, by the destruction of a great deal of cultural heritage of the previous historical epoch. It also applies to legal education and science in Bukovyna. In the years of Soviet power in Bukovyna there were no universities, which would train lawyers, that is why the development of legal education and research traditions was stopped until the independence of Ukraine, the change of ideological views and democratization of society took place. In 1991 a new stage of development of legal education and science began in Bukovyna, when the restoration of the Law department of Yuriy Fedkovych Cher-nivtsi National University and the creation of a number of higher education in-stitutions with Law departments took place.
