Essay

An integrated historical legal analysis of establishing and development of the institute of punishment in criminal law of the Ukrainian SSR in 1919–1991 based on study of regulatory sources, archive documents, materials and theoretical researches has been made in this dissertation. Political and legal approaches of the state to creation of legal grounds of criminal punishment evolution regulation in 1919–1991 through analysis of systematized criminal legal regulatory acts, archive materials and different researches’ points of view have been examined. It is defined that social interactions that created a system of measures during different political courses of Soviet power (military communism, NEP and its curtailing, accelerated collectivization resulting in Holodomor, industrialization, mass purges, Second World War, postwar period, destalinization, subsequent “thaw” and “perestroika”) were prerequisites of development of the institute of criminal punishment during this historical period.
