Essay

This research has given an in-depth account of feminization of poverty in Nigeria and Ukraine. It explained some of the historical and cultural factors that perpetuate feminine poverty in the area of study; defined feminization of poverty and concepts related to it; elaborated theoretical frameworks for the analysis of the process of feminization of poverty; compared the factors and consequences, similarities and differences of feminization of poverty in Nigeria and Ukraine. It dugs into the nature of labor market inequality and exclusion in the two countries under study thereby describing the current situation and explaining feminization of poverty in the labor market which produce gender gap in incomes. This was achieved by comparing the processes in each society; discovering the differences and similarities between both, the causes and possible effects if nothing is done and recommendations to reduce the problem. Using the Structuration theory, this research has explained the presence of feminization of poverty in Nigeria and Ukraine through appreciation of the duality of structure and agency. The Political, economic, educational, cultural and religious institutions have in some ways deprived women of equal opportunities as men thereby exposing them to poverty. Women on the other hand have been instrumental to choices which deprive them of equal life chances. They institutions of society have influenced women’s beliefs and perceptions which produce their actions while women on the other hand have influenced the institutions by their acceptance of gender norms and have been able to change aspects they rose up to resist. This research explained and compared the causes and consequences of feminization of poverty In Nigeria and Ukraine.
