Essay

The object: the collection of stories «Interpreter of Maladies» (1999), «Unaccustomed Earth» (2008), the novel «The Namesake» (2003). The goal of research: to determine the characteristics of hero`s transcultural identity`s representation in Jhumpa Lahiri`s writings. Research methods: culture-historical (role and place definition of Jhumpa Lahiri`s writings in the US literature of the 20th century), historical and typological (definition of the themes specifics, motifs, images, plot features of the writer's works compared with other American writers), functional (identification of Jhumpa Lahiri`s poetics` peculiarities), hermeneutical (interpretation of literary text`s various aspects), biographical (revealing reflection peculiarities of the writer's personal experience in her writings), naratological analysis (specificity analysys of Jhumpa Lahiri`s narrative manner), psychoanalysis (exploring the subconscious and unconscious heroes` depth layers), post-colonial and decolonial principles`criticism (reinterpretation of the problem of «otherness» in transculture discourse). The theoretical significance of the thesis is the development of problems related to Asian-American literature study and modern transcultural literature of the United States at the turn of the millennium, in particular in Jhumpa Lahiri`s writings. A complex interpretation of the writer's works is offered within the framework of national identity discourse and in transculture context. The practical value of the research lies in the fact that its main provisions can be used in further study and analysis of modern American literature in the context of transculture, in particular, during the study of Jhumpa Lahiri`s writings. The research results will be useful during the lecture courses formulation on the history of foreign literature at the end of the 20th – early of the 21st centuries, the theory of literature, the theory and practice of translation, linguistic studies, Asian-American literature courses, focused on marginality and dual identity phenomenon, during the study guide ordering on the indicated disciplines, as well as for writing research articles, course topics and diploma papers. The scientific novelty of the research: an analysis of the study of Jhumpa Lahiri`s writings in transculture context and the problem of the hero`s identity was carried out for the first time in the Ukrainian literary criticism. Jhumpa Lahiri`s writings is viewed from the perspective of national identity. Novelty is also in the analysis of Indian and American elements` interaction in the writer's work. Jhumpa Lahiri`s writings should be considered not only in multiculturalism context. There is a symbolic «transition» from multiculturalism to transculture. The duality of Jhumpa Lahiri`s text is seen in the combination of Indian cultural code and American experience. A number of important Indian elements (symbols) that contributed to the formation of writer`s poetics of prose are pointed out for the first time: rice ceremony annaprazan, name`s duality (daknam, bhalonam), precedent phenomena. The field of use: scientific research in literary criticism and educational process.
