Karunyk K. George Y. Shevelov’s Research into the Ukrainian Language

Object – a corpus of George Y. Shevelov’s linguistic works on the history of the Ukrainian language and its dialects, on the Ukrainian language stylistics and syntax, on the language standardization, on the language policy; aim – reconstruction of G. Y. Shevelov’s methodological principles and linguistic views, specifying his theoretical and practical output in the study of several aspects of the Ukrainian language and its history; methods – special methods of linguistic historiography: 1) collecting and arranging documents and sources, 2) establishing the chronology, 3) reconstruction of the time horizons, 4) interpretation of the conceptions, views, correlations, 5) re-modelling of the context; actualizing method; novelty – it is the first comprehensive analysis of George Y. Shevelov’s linguistic views and of his methodological approach toward the Ukrainian language history, the study offers elaboration and generalization of Shevelov’s principle postulates; results – can be put to use in the teaching of the history of linguistics, of the history of Standard Ukrainian, of historical dialectology, of phonetics and phonology, of the history of the Ukrainian orthography, of syntax, of the Soviet language policy, of style in language; field – philology.
