RESUME Tomashevska A. Yu. Development of prospective pharmacists’ English lexical competence in reading and speaking through self-directed study. – As a manuscript. Thesis for a Candidate Degree in Pedagogical Studies, Specialty 13.00.02 – Theory and Methods of Teaching (Germanic Languages). Ternopil Volodymyr Hnatiuk National Pedagogical University, Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine. Ternopil, 2019. The dissertation theoretically establishes and develops the methodology of the English language lexical competence formation in reading and speaking through self-directed study of prospective pharmacists. The paper analyzes the current state of the problem, studies psychological preconditions for the development of foreign lexical competence in reading and speaking (ensuring students’ cognitive activity, their awareness of the professional importance of tasks, concentration on voluntary memorization, the use of effective memorization strategies, the organization of systematic revision and the encouragement of students to revise independently, systematic supply of new lexical units and their processing, ensuring proper practice for intensive and regular use of new lexical units in speech, the application of exercises aimed at classification, grouping, use of graphic aids). Linguistic peculiarities of the English language of pharmacy and pharmaceutical vocabulary, as well as the specifics of the organization of prospective pharmacists’ self-directed study in English language lexical competence formation in reading and speaking (creating conditions for the development of students’ autonomy, the implementation of different types of self-study, the use of appropriate means, constant feedback concerning outcomes, encouraging students’ self- and peer-evaluation of outcomes) have been identified. Conceptual ideas of the research are represented by the core principles of communicative-cognitive, reflexive and integrated approaches. The units of material selection for the development of prospective pharmacists’ English lexical competence in reading and speaking through self-directed study (professionally oriented texts (educational article in the textbook, patient information leaflet (PIL)), as well as lexical units have been determined. The criteria for texts selection are defined as following: authenticity (conditional authenticity), topicality, informational content, frequency of usage of selected lexical units, availability and feasibility, the scope of the text. Selection criteria for lexical units are the following: use and frequency, topicality, functionality, availability of the equivalent in Latin, consideration of the professional sphere of communication. Selected terms are divided into three typological groups according to the criterion of graphic form similarity in the English, Latin, and Ukrainian languages: lexical units, similar in graphic form and having the same lexical meaning in three languages; lexical units, similar in graphic form in two languages (English and Latin or English and Ukrainian) and the same in meaning, or which have similar components in the three languages that help to understand or memorize them; lexical units, differing in graphic form in three languages, but having the same meaning. The stages of the formation of English language lexical competence in reading and speaking (the familiarization stage, which involves familiarization with new lexical units, demonstration of the lexical units usage peculiarities, as well as familiarization with the main strategies; the training stage aimed at automation of students’ actions when dealing with new lexical units on the level of words, word combinations, sentences, clauses; the application stage that provides activation of students' actions as regards to new lexical units at the text level) have been grounded. The subsystem of exercises, which takes into account the methodological typology of the English language pharmaceutical lexis, has been developed. It concludes on the possibility of a certain compression of particular subgroups of exercises focusing on lexical units, which do not cause any difficulty in mastering (the first and partly the second typological groups). The model of the development of prospective pharmacists’ English lexical competence in reading and speaking through self-directed study has been built. The obtained results through experimental studies prove the effectiveness of the suggested methodology and its implementation feasibility in relation to a rigid management of students’ independent study. Recommendations for university lecturers concerning the development of prospective pharmacists’ English lexical competence in reading and speaking through self-directed study have been presented. Key words: English lexical competence in reading, English lexical competence in speaking, prospective pharmacists, self-directed study, autonomy, subsystem of exercises, lexical units, professional texts.
