Essay

Object: modeling in the information support of architectural design; goal: is to identify the possibilities of application of computer modeling tools of the urban space as a system at the analytical stages of architectural design, comparison of their effectiveness with traditional architectural modeling tools to form a comprehensive image of the urban space situation and justification of the further implementation of computer modeling tools of the urban space into the design process; methods: general scientific methods of analysis, synthesis, comparison of text and graphic materials; modeling theory, research of complexity and methods of expert evaluation were applied; novelty: for the first time the modeling tools of the urban space as a system were classified and degree of efficiency of pedestrian flow models, 3D models of the urban space and information models of the urban space were determined to reveal the possibilities of their use in the design process; for the first time on the basis of the results of expert evaluation and comparison with traditional architectural models, the possibilities and perspectives of implementation were defined, and the advantages of application of computer modeling tools of the urban space as a system in the design process were summarized; a set of criteria for evaluation of architectural models based on the general scientific understanding of modeling specificity and informativity as the fundamental characteristic of the model were improved, as well as the strategy for assessment of the modeling effectiveness taking into account the requirements of the methodological principles of theory and practice of expert assessments; further developments were obtained in systematization of theoretical findings about the role and functions of architectural modeling; in typology and historical development of current graphical models, scale models and computer architectural models; results: basic premises of the work could be used as a theoretical basis for further methodological developments related to application of computer modeling tools of the urban space as a system in the project activities and educational design, some results of the work concerning assessment of the modeling effectiveness can be applied in studies related to the implementation of models into the architectural design process; the degree of implementation: architectural design; branch: architecture.
