The dissertation is devoted to the problem of forming future philologists’ German competence in reading mass media texts. Linguistic features of German mass media texts have been analyzed and the appropriateness of focusing attention on newspaper and journal articles have been grounded. Practical, developmental, educational, instructional, professionally oriented aims of the formation of the future philologists’ German competence in reading mass media texts have been specified, and the objective and procedural aspects of the content have been determined, within which communicative, linguosociocultural, linguistic and teaching components have been refined. The analysis of scientific publications and the results of the survey of future philologists demonstrated the appropriateness of using the electronic learning management system Moodle. Three stages of forming German competence in reading mass media texts have been distinguished. The purpose of the preparatory stage is activating students’ on the subject being studied, developing skills to navigate the websites of German newspapers and magazines, understand graphic and figurative information, apply educational and communication strategies; forming speaking skills, abilities to use linguosociocultural material, analyse the structural and semantic article organization. The main stage provides the development of future philologists’ language skills in various types of reading. The purpose of the interpretative stage is to control the reading comprehension, assess the level of the development of skimming, scanning, reading for understanding general information, and close reading skills and further improvement of reading skills, as well as the development of critical reading skills. The subsystem of exercises, which contains four groups, has been developed. The first group includes four subgroups of exercises for the development of skills to navigate the structure of the websites of German newspapers and magazines, the formation and development of skills to understand graphic and figurative information, the formation of skills to use learning, communicative strategies, skills in critical perception of mass media texts. The second group is aimed at forming the language skills in reading – lexical and grammatical, and the third group is focused on the formation of linguosociocultural skills. The model of the organization of the process of forming future philologists’ German competence in the reading mass media texts has been suggested. The model has been implemented within the discipline “Practical Course of the German Language” with the use of the Moodle system, which provides students with access to educational material, operational feedback, self-control. In order to verify the developed methodology and the effectiveness of the suggested subsystem of exercises, as well as to determine a more optimal version of the model, an experiment was conducted. Its results, validated by Fisher’s angular transformation, demonstrated that at the preparatory stage it is appropriate for students to do exercises during the classroom hours under the direct and indirect supervision of a teacher which is conditioned by the specifics of authentic digital articles of German newspapers and magazines. On the basis of the conducted research and the results of the experiment, the methodological recommendations for teachers on forming future philologists’ German competence in the reading mass media texts have been developed.
