Essay

The dissertation is devoted to the problem of impact of fortifications and defensive works on the formation of Kyiv urban landscape of the 18th – early 20th c. which gave rise to the progressive tendency of unification of historically separated territories into a single city ensemble. The aim of the research is to perform a complex historical monument study of the immovable objects of cultural heritage, i.e., Kyiv defensive system of the 18th – early 20th c., and its influence on the urban landscape. The outlined aim determines the following tasks: to characterize the principle historical periods of Ukraine connected with fortification building in Kyiv; to trace historical transformations of Kyiv landscape and its administrative division caused by fortification building in the 18th – early 20th c.; to give objective assessment of the preserved fortifications and historical landscape of modern Kyiv and compose recommendations on their protection, revalorization, and usage in the future. The object of the research is cultural landscape of Kyiv and its changes connected with fortification building and exploitation in the 18th – early 20th c. The subject of the research is objects of the defensive system of Kyiv of the 18th – early 20th c. The author’s recommendations on preservation and revitalization of the existing fortifications and defensive works in the city of Kyiv have been worked out. The perspectives of using these historical objects in the future have been outlined.
