Essay

This dissertation is the first integral study of the functional-semantic category of verbal quantitative, which expresses the temporal characteristic of action and is presented as a quantitative sign of its continuance. The category of quantity is one of the most universal and widespread in language and speech, since quantitative semantics is evident to a greater or lesser extent in a large part of the linguistic units. Interest in the categorical structure of verbs is explained by the semantic (content versatility) and syntactic (predicate, modal time, quantitative and other relations in the sentence structure) peculiarities of the functioning of these units.Studying the verbal quantity and means of its expression, a new approach was used in this paper. It is proposed a model of interpretation of quantitative meanings which are realized in the Ukrainian literary language, based on the ratios of the total quantitative value (conceptual basis of the linguistic quantity) and the interval category; whereas the interval is the basic degree of the category of temporality, the quantitative feature of action has a temporal basis, and verbal quantitative appears as a quantitative characteristic of an action. The concept of an interval category allows you to penetrate into the nature and meaning of the verb, in particular into its quantitative component. In the first section, "The category of verbal quantitative as an object of functional semantic research", it is interpreted the understanding of the quantitative characteristics of an action, since the categorical nature of the quantity (quantization) is realized differently. The attention is focused on the understanding of the quantity as a conceptual category and quantitative as a quantifiable characteristic of an action. It was found that the category of verbal quantitative occurs at the intersection of a general category of quantity and verbal quantity, which is called quantitative, and it is a component of the interval category. Taking into account this the category of verbal quantitative occupies a central place in modern grammar.
