Rula N. Semantic and Syntactic Typology of Compound Sentences in modern Ukrainian

An integrated study of the semantic and syntactic structure of compound sentences in the modern Ukrainian language, taking into account their formal, grammatical and communicative features, was conducted in the thesis. The analysis of the examined syntactic units was carried out from the standpoint of functional and categorical grammar. Singling out of semantic groups of the studied sentences was substantiated, taking into account the functional potential of coordinating conjunctions and the semantics of their predicative parts. The methodology of research of compound constructions in the modern Ukrainian language was conditioned by the purpose and tasks of the thesis and was based on the combination of the methods and principles of general scientific and special linguistic analysis. In the thesis, the linguistic essence of coordination was concretized as a formal and syntactic linguistic category, its specific features are revealed as well as the mechanisms of realization of the coordinating connection in coordinating constructions. The division of coordinating conjunction into groups was modified, and the functions of connective means in expressing the content of a sentence were clarified.
