The dissertation explores the formation and development of views on the right to freedom of peaceful assembly in the history of domestic legal thought and distinguishes the following stages: the period of veche meetings of Kievan Rus, the period of stay of Ukrainian lands under foreign jurisdiction, the period of Magdeburg law, the period of the national liberation struggle, the period of independence Ukraine, The latest period. The concept and legal nature of this law is disclosed in the framework of modern legal doctrine. The author’s classification of peaceful assemblies is formulated, the concepts of «peaceful assembly» and «right to freedom of peaceful assembly» are defined. The competence of state authorities and local self-government as components of the mechanism to ensure the right to freedom of peaceful assembly is described.
