Essay

For the first time in the Ukrainian linguistics the dissertation thesis provides a comprehensive study of the derivational potential of verbs denoting the internal state of a creature based on a specially developed register of base verbs (more than 700 verbs) and their derivatives.Based on synthesis and generalization of the distinctive features of stative verbs, outlined in the scientific literature, the key semantic and grammatical characteristics of verbs of state have been singled out, which are the basis for their identification in the lexicographic continuum. For the first time in Ukrainian Studies, the verbs denoting the internal state have been combined into the field structure, the outer limits of the field have been defined and its internal segmentation has been carried out. It has been established that the core of the outlined field is formed by the units related to the meaning component of ‘stasis’; the close periphery is marked by the seme of ‘acquisition’; the far periphery denotes ‘causal acquisition’. All verbs denoting the internal state have been divided into 2 lexico-semantic groups – verbs denoting the physical, physiological state (include 8 subgroups) and verbs denoting the emotional and mental state of a creature (include 9 subgroups). The derivational potential of verbs denoting the internal state has been defined on the basis of word-formation paradigms in terms of stem-centered derivatology. The word-formation paradigms of derivatives have been divided into blocks – substantival, adjectival, and verbal. The research material shows that the derivational potential of verbs as a class of base words is determined mainly by their semantic characteristics and valency.
