Essay

The paper deals with the study of prosodic organization of phono semantic complexesin emotional speech in modern English cinematographic discourse. The research is conducted within the framework of linguosemiotic and functional-and-pragmatic approaches. Being an integral part of phonetic studies, suprasegmentals are worth being included into the objects of phonosemantic investigations due to their considerable phonosemantic potential. Under certain circumstances suprasegmental means may interact with lexical means which causes associative-symbolic (iconic) relation between two levels. As a result, it creates a motivate d language sign, where the signifier denotes the meaning (semantics) and the signified –the prosodic form (phonetics). The dissertation takes up the issue of iconicity on suprasegmental level that tends to appear in emotional speech due to intonation’s essential ability to perform the emotional function. Iconic potential of suprasegmentals is realized through phonosemantic means that are definedas the use of phonetic means that are built upon particular semantic meaning establishing the iconicity principle. This paper discusses that phonosemantic means combineinto phonosemantic complexes (hereinafter PC)that includethe means of both segmental and suprase gmentallevels and ability to mime the utterance meaning through their formal characteristics. The classification of PC is based on the semantic criterion and includes the following PC: "Movement", "Physical dimensions" and "Emotional state".
