Subject of study: the scientific work of the Polish historian of the second half of the 19th – early 20th centuries Ludwik Kubala. Purpose of the study: to establish the general contribution of the Polish historian, representative of the Lviv scientific center Ludwik Kubala to the study of the events of 17th century Ukrainian history. Methods: comparative-historical, retrospective, historical-genetic, historical-typological, methods of historiographic synthesis and analysis. Scientific novelty: a first attempt of comprehensively study the life and scientific activity of Ludwik Kubala and his contribution to the process of the study of Ukrainian history of the 16th – 17th centuries. A comprehensive analysis of the scientific historiographic tradition of studying the historian's heritage is carried out; the peculiarities and evolution of the style of L. Kubala's historiography were determined; the place of the history of Ukrainian lands in its general creative work is established; the essence of the image of Ukraine in the imagination of L. Kubala, his views on the general course of the Cossack-Polish conflict of the second half of the seventeenth century were investigated; the peculiarities of the historian's view of the place and role of the Pereyaslav Council in 1654 and the Hadyach Treaty of 1658 in the history of the Commonwealth of the Second half of the seventeenth century are clarified. The practical meaning of investigation: the materials and results of the study can be used to develop courses on the history of Polish historical science of the second half of the 19th – early 20th centuries, ukrainian history, the history of Polish-Ukrainian relations of this period.
