Pankova T. Structural-semantic and communicative-pragmatic aspects of polypredicative complex sentences (based on English-language prose).

The dissertation for the first time offers a complex structural-semantic and communicative-pragmatic analysis of polypredicative complex sentences in English-language prose. The conceptual boundaries of the category of polypredicativity as an obligatory formal-grammatical and semantic feature of the polypredicative complex sentence are specified in the research; polypredicative hypotactic constructions in terms of the ways of generation and types of connection of dependent components are described; the peculiarities of division levels are clarified; and also the specific character of semantic and syncretic relations between the constituents of the polypredicative complex sentence is revealed. The application of the communicative-pragmatic approach enabled the author to determine the role of actual division models of polypredicative complex sentences, to work out their communicative types, and also to elicit the illocutionary potential of speech acts represented by polypredicative complex sentences in English-language prose.
