Essay

An analysis of the structure, variability and transformation of forest landscapes in the Fako-Meme Divisions of Cameroon was carried out; scientific data on forest landscapes in the study area were collected, summarized and evaluated. This allowed us to substantiate natural and modern anthropogenic transformations of forest landscapes with the aim of reviewing adaptive environmental management strategies for the sustainable use of forest resources. Fako-Meme is a typical sample of a division where the anthropogenic factors in the humid equatorial forests zone are diverse. Therefore, the obtained data reflects the maximum view of natural and anthropogenic characteristics: relief, soil, vegetation, wildlife, cultivable lands, etc. within the limits of the forest landscapes of Cameroon. This Thesis is equally the first to have carried out an intensive and detail study that demarcates forest boundaries, bare surfaces, degraded forests, residential areas for the period after 2010. Natural differences of the territory are revealed and their general division into districts has been carried out for the first time. In general, Cameroon in the past 50 years has suffered great loses in its forest landscape, forest losses is estimated averagely from 0,59 % to 0,37 % per year, an average of 0,48 % per year. In the Fako-Meme region in 1965, the forest covered 76 % of the total forest area, and in 2015 – 42 %, i.e. an average annual decline of 0,68 %, which is much higher than that of the entire nation.
