Essay

This research addresses an actual practical scientific task: improving the quality and accuracy of assessing the impact of military activity on the environment and individuals through the concept of environmental risk. The proposed concept of the environmental risk assessment will reduce the cost of environmental protection measures. The existing methods of environmental risks assessment with their advantages and disadvantages had been considered in this dissertation. The analysis of environmental risk possibility under the action of threshold and non-threshold stressor has been done. It is determined that the existing assessment methods are extremely inflexible, and the concept of environmental risk is more resource-efficient. Methodological basis of deterministic probabilistic environmental risk exposure estimation based on the concept of the environmental risk was analyzed and summarized. According to the one-dimensional and two-dimensional Monte-Carlo Method, a phased risk assessment of the environmental impact on humans and the environment due to military activities was proposed. Based on the case studies of the former missile base in the Zhytomyr region and the International Peacekeeping and Security Center (former Yavoriv Training Area), the level of environmental risk for the population and the environment of these military sites was estimated.
