The dissertation is devoted to the study of the theological aspects of the
worship of Holy Week as one of the important factors in the matter of personal
salvation of a person, which positively influences the formation of spiritual
experience and theological knowledge, for the spiritual and moral revival of
Ukrainian society.
The object of the study is the Holy Week liturgical texts contained in the
Fasting Triode.
The dissertation analyzes the liturgical texts of Holy Week according to the
main aspects of the dogma of Orthodox theology (soteriology, Christology,
eschatology, triadology, ecclesiology), the location of which for consideration was
determined by the dominance and prevalence of these elements in hymnography of
Passion Week, which helps to focus on a specific topic in the study and assimilation
of the content of hymnography.
The variability of translation of the Church Slavonic and Ukrainian languages
of the Lenten Triodion has been revealed; some inaccuracies of the Ukrainian
translation were found. The use of the term “nature” as the equivalent of the Church
Slavonic lexicons “nature” and “being” cannot be considered as containing dogmatic
errors, however, the revealed omissions of translation hinder the formation of
theological thought and limit the full disclosure of the provisions of patristic theology
Christian dogmas.
It presents in the modern understanding and in accessible language the
fundamental Christian religious truths contained in the liturgical texts of the
designated days. Imbedded in poetic form, liturgical texts are more readily perceived
by worshipers who lack theological experience and knowledge. In the context of the
disclosure of the soteriological aspect of Holy Week liturgical texts, it emphasizes the
internal aspect of man's salvation, the change in the way of being of his nature,
denying mechanical salvation only as a consequence of the merits of Jesus Christ.
The approach to interpreting the theme of the end of the world, the call to
repentance has been improved. In revealing the educational function of the songs, the
focus is on a personal meetingof each person with the Savior, for which the image of
a barren fig tree was used. The need to prepare the soul for this upcoming meeting is
emphasized.
The claim that the law of faith is based on the law of prayer has further
developed, indicating that many Christian tenets have been introduced into liturgical
texts for the purpose of their articulation and acceptance by believers.
The relationship of hymnography with the history and tenets of the Orthodox
Church, in particular, establishes the correlation of the participation of the authors of
liturgical texts in the formation of the Orthodox doctrine with its subsequent
reflection in the hymnography. The conclusions and theoretical allegations, based on
the dissertation research, contribute to a deeper understanding of the doctrine of the
Orthodox Church, which is revealed in divine services.
