This dissertation presents a study of roles, actualized by the English-speaking subject in the communicative situation “Conversation between Friends”, simulated in film discourse. The object-matter of the research is the subject's role, realized by the means of the English language, in the communicative situation “Conversation between Friends”. The subject-matter of this research is the role potential as the unity of its cognitive foundations, communicative features and means of verbal manifestation in the relationship with the variations of the characteristics of this communicative situation. The study aims at determining the types and subtypes of the communicative situation “Conversation between Friends” on the basic of identifying and studying the actualized subject’s roles. The analysis of the communicative situation “Conversation between Friends” employs an integrated multi-faceted theoretical and methodological apparatus of discursive study intended for achieving the aim of the research. The theoretical value of the dissertation is due to its contribution to discourse, communicative linguistics, cognitive linguistics, communicative-functional studies.The practical value of the results obtained lies in the possibility of their use in the course of theoretical grammar of the English language (chapter “Pragmatics”), text linguistics (chapter “Text Subject”), general linguistics (chapters “Language and Thinking”, “Language and Society”), in special courses on discourse studies, communicative linguistics, theory of verbal communication, cognitive linguistics, linguoculturology, linguistic conflictology. The results of the study can be also used by representatives of various fields of humanities, interested in the phenomenon of friendship.
