Essay

The dissertation is a theoretical and experimental research about the problem of spelling competence of future teachers in the process of studying linguistic disciplines. The paper analyzes the key concepts of «competence», «professional communicative competence», «orthography», «punctuation» clarifies the concept of «spelling competence for future teachers of Ukrainian language and literature», which was clarified in the research as an acquired personal ability to write any functional style in accordance with the current spelling norms. The speaker acquires this ability on the basis of respectful attitude to the language. The spelling competence includes cognitive (knowledge), operational (skills), activity (experience), value-meaning (values and motivation), and behavioral (actions) components. The criteria of spelling competence structure was formed on its formation with the following indicators of control: information-cognitive (basic terminology in Ukrainian spelling and knowledge of spelling and punctuation rules of Ukrainian spelling); operational activity (the ability to find spelling and dots in written text; to recognize spelling and dots, distinguish their types; to apply spelling and punctuation rules; to use dictionaries to check correct spelling); effective (the ability to correctly spell the written language according to a certain communicative situation; to find and correct spelling and punctuation in own and others’ texts). According to the defined criteria, four levels of spelling competence of students of philological specialties are distinguished: high, sufficient, medium, and elementary. The research suggested a method of forming the spelling competence for future teachers of Ukrainian language and literature in the process of studying linguistic disciplines; methods and techniques, forms, means, and technologies of teaching orthographic norms of the Ukrainian language were represented; a system of exercises and tasks in the formation of spelling competence for future teachers of the Ukrainian language and literature was proposed; the effectiveness of experimental training was confirmed; the ideas of innovative methods in teaching of Ukrainian language spelling in the system of the competent educational paradigm of higher school was developed.
