Essay

The dissertation determines the main principles of spatial organization of monumental murals and object-spatial interior decoration of Ukrainian churches of the first quarter of the XX century, as based on the example of design and artistic activity of Modest Sosenko (1875–1920). The materials of previous research works have been systematized and generalized. The field observations have been conducted and the sacred polychrome paintings of Mоdest Sosenko have been identified. The application of functional, compositional, figurative-semantic, technical and technological principles, which characterize the creative method of the author in sacred interior design, has been highlighted. The comprehensive field observations helped to evaluate the existing state of preservation of monumental works, outline the stages and reasons of destruction, and develop and apply in practice the ways of their preservation. The significance of sacred creativity of Modest Sosenko has been emphasized and the recommendations concerning application of these principles in modern project and artistic design activity have been foregrounded.
