Essay

The thesis is dedicated to the analyses of pollutants’ seasonal and inter-annual variability and the influence of meteorological conditions on the formation of atmospheric air pollution level in Ukrainian industrial cities. The study analyzes the significant seasonal variations of pollutants’ content, its spatial distribution, amplitudes, phases, determination coefficients and average values. It was found that the seasonality appears for dust in case of the fogs’ frequency increase. The seasonal variations of sulfur dioxide in cities are better observed under the prevailing coal burning during the heating season. The seasonality of carbon monoxide amplifies in case of emission decrease from point sources. It might increase the sensitivity to the impact of wildfire emissions and open burning during the warm period. The seasonal variations of nitrogen dioxide are better observed when the concentrations decrease and natural factors of NO2 variations tend to be predominant. Moreover, phases shift is usually observed from the cold to warm season. The seasonality of formaldehyde in cities does not depend on the changes of emissions and meteorological variability. The quantitative characteristics differ in cities which showed the crucial role of local conditions for the HCHO spatio-temporal distribution.
