Essay

The thesis is dedicated to the chamber and instrumental work of the outstanding composer, organist, pianist, conductor and teacher Max Reger (1873-1916), whose figure is shown as significant in terms of formation and development of the main stylistic trends of German musical culture in the late XIX - early XX centuries. The study is based on the most exemplary chamber ensembles and works for solo string instruments: String Quartet in D minor "Jugend" (op. WoO II/2), Piano Quintet № 1 in C Minor (op. WoO II/9), Violin sonatas № 1 op. 1, № 4 op. 72, Four Sonatas for Cello and Piano op. 5, op. 28, op. 74, op. 116, Serenades for Flute, Violin and Viola (op. 77a, op. 141a), Six Preludes and Fugues for Violin solo op. 131a, Three Duos (Canons and Fugues) in Old Style for two Violins, op.131b, Three Suites for cello solo op. 131c, Three Suites for viola solo op. 131d, Quintet for string and clarinet op. 146. The thesis is the first comprehensive examination of chamber and instrumental creativity of Max Reger in the light of the individual composer's style; it analyzes and defines the role of chamber and instrumental music in the process of stylistic evolution of his creation. The thesis also sets forth the typology of individual style of Max Reger, based on the analysis of main stylistic trends in the European music art of late 19th - early 20th century (late romanticism, neoclassicism, modern / Jugendstil).
