Essay

The dissertation researches the belles-lettres heritage of A.Krymsky as a significant experimental phenomenon of modernizing the Ukrainian literary tradition. A pioneering study, it comprehends – in a systematic, overall and multi-faceted way – an evolution of the literary-critical thought on the author’s literary-artistic works from the historiographical-receptive and contactological perspectives: the paper refutes the thesis on the vacuum of interest on the part of researchers, distinguishes three stages of reception, covers major concepts, topicalizes the issue of literary-artistic intellectualism to disprove the traditional dichotomy of the literary “Populism” and Modernism in terms of their polarization, analyses the novel Andrii Lahovs’kyi on the background of the major texts of Ukrainian literature (second half of the 19th – early 20th cc.) dealing with the life of the intelligentsia, an intellectual as tradition in the shaping of the Ukrainian literary prose. It highlights the issue of autobiographism in the writer’s works not as a simplified naturalistic reconstruction of the author’s biography, but as a super-complex system of masks and reflections, autopsychological intellectualism wherein organically coexist both literary-artistic fiction and psycho-physiologically motivated, in detail intertextualized, autobiographic substratum of the writer’s soul’s “encyclopedia”, inclusion of the intertext, scholarly commentaries, polemic associations, phantom “voices”, retrospective and prospective visions etc. The specificity of conceptualizing the literary-artistic characterization in A. Krymsky’s belles-lettres with a clear focus on experimentation with imagery and narrative is under study as well.
