Essay

The thesis deals with the genre and stylistic strategies of fiction and nonfiction literary works written by Oleksa Izars’kyi, on the material of his «family chronical»: narratives «Ranok» («Morning»), «Viktor i Lialia» («Victor and Lialia»), «Chudo v Myslovytsiakh» («Miracle in Mysłowice»), «Saksons’ka zyma» («Winter in Saxones») and novels «Kyiv», «Poltava», «Lito nad ozerom» («Summer above lake»), «Stolytsia nad Izarom» («Capital above Isar»), and also on the basis of documentary genres: writer’s diary and letters of different periods. In the Ukrainian literature studies the paper is the first comprehensive research of Oleksa Izars’kyi’s literary works that have been analyzed through the prism of genre and stylistic peculiarities of his «family chronical», including novels and narratives united by the image of the main character Victor Lysenko. In the thesis genre and stylistic modifications of writer’s diary and letters have been studied; ideological and intellectual vectors of artist’s writing have been underlined in the context of Ukrainian emigrant literature of the second half of the twentieth century, in particular in the period of Artistic Ukrainian Movement’s existence, as the writer belonged to the number of its representatives. For the first time the figure of Oleksa Izars’kyi has been regarded from the view of generational identity of the Ukrainian emigrant, for whom the image of the homeland is inseparable from the motive of endless anguish, dream, mirage, «lost paradise», «childhood memory». Writer’s individual style has been revealed through the decoding of ontological meanings, concepts and archetypes. Oleksa Izars’kyi’s letters to the artists and cultural figures of Ukraine and diaspora are introduced into scientific circulation. It was established that Oleksa Izars’kyi’s style combines realistic depiction of actuality with the impressionistic manner of writing, which is especially evident in landscapes that form the mosaic of lyrical deviations, and in the portraits of heroes. The linearity of Izars’kyi’s narration is special, because despite the difficulty of the epoch, in the works we do not meet acute conflict situations of the protagonist with his family and surrounding people.
