Kukharchyshyn M. Semantic derivation in Ukrainian biological terminology.

The dissertation is the first attempt at the complex analysis of semantic derivation which occurs against the background of processes of terminologization, transterminologization and determinologization in biological terminology of the Ukrainian language. The paper substantiates the theoretical and methodological principles of the study of semantic derivation in biological terminology; explores the external and internal linguistic causes of this process; describes the terminologization of common language units in biological terminology (metaphorical and metonymical transfer of meanings of commonly used words in the layer of terms); characterizes the process of transterminologization, i.e. rethinking of terms of other terminological systems in biological one and migration of biological terms into other terminological systems; considers the determinologization of biological terms and analyzes the semantic transformations which arise in the semantic structure of a biological term used in journalistic, artistic or other terminological systems. The dissertation materials will contribute to the deepening and refinement of knowledge about the patterns of formation and development of biological terminology of the Ukrainian language. They can be used to organize and standardize a specific terminological system in lexicographic practice and to create specialized textbooks and manuals, as well as serving as a basis for theoretical studies in the Ukrainian terminology.
