Essay

The thesis performed with the use of descriptional, functional and comperatative methods within the research direction called dialectology of the city (urban social dialectology) for the first time presents a complex analysis of the phonetics of the Ukrainian Lvivian speech of the early XXI century. The Lviv city is located in the territory of spreading of the Galician-Bukovinian group of accents of South-Western idiom and functioning of Western-Ukrainian (Galician) variant of the Ukrainian literary language. Lingual nature of Lviv has been changing during the process of its formation that has been caused by internal dynamics of language and extralinguistic factors. The latter contains the changes in administrative identity of the city, and accordingly, of the official language; different social and ideological trends in the sphere of linguistic canons propagandized by the governments of the countries to which the city has been included; continuous migration of Ukrainians from the suburbs to the city; emigration and immigration processes of Poles in the pre-war period, immigration of Russians after 1939 year, etc. Amid linguistic polyphony of the Lviv up to 1939 the Ukrainian and Polish languages have been dominating which has caused the specifics of the research locus. The relevance of the topic is due to the insufficient study of the speech of city dwellers, in particular, their phonetics, lack of analysis of phonetic level of the Ukrainian Lvivian speech of the early XXI century.
