Essay

For the first time, the peculiarities of the modern social doctrine of the Patriarchate of Constantinople have been comprehensively studied. The Church's social doctrine has been found to have evolved significantly. It was found that initially the main values offered to society were the common good, justice and solidarity. Awareness of the dignity of the individual as a core value has led to the transformation of social doctrine. In 2020, the Ecumenical Patriarchate proposed a renewed social doctrine, at the center of which is the dignity of the human person. Interpretations of the values of individual rights and dignity can be realized in two main ways: defending freedom and individual rights to one's own identity in liberal positions and traditionalist speculation based on manipulations of collectivism. Understanding the self-worth of the family contributes to the theological legitimization of the autonomy of family life from outside interference, even by church authorities. Criticism of the tendencies of modern globalized capitalism to transform labor into a commodity, to humiliate workers by reducing their personality only to the functions of labor and consumption useful for the market, is aimed at defending the moral and legal order in general and the ideas of absolute dignity of the individual in particular. Individualism and collectivism must be replaced by personalism and communitarianism. The radical peacemaking principles of the social doctrine of the Ecumenical Patriarchate are manifested in the derivation of the imperative of compulsory participation in peacebuilding from the vision of man as called to communion with God. A person who has the experience of communion with God already in the present state of Christians actually has the property of holiness. And already on the basis of the vocation to live as saints for Christians, peacekeeping is considered to be the main feature of their identity. It is characteristic of today to emphasize the importance of dialogue as a specific way of peacekeeping. The social doctrine of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, proposed in 2020, has all the hallmarks of a transition to moderate liberal and post-liberal thinking
