Object: novels of Ukrainian writers, where the authors had recreated the events of the Cossack era: “The Black Rada. Chronicle of 1663” (1845) by P. Kulish, “Hetman Ivan Vygovsky” (1928) by I. Nechui-Levytsky, “Khmelnitsky” (1957, 1963, 1965) by I. Le, “I am Bogdan” (1983) by P. Zagrebelny, “Mallow” (1968) and “Horde” (1992) by R. Ivanychuk, “Fortress on Borysthenes” (1993) by V. Chemerys, “Berestechko” (1999) by L. Kostenko, “Dagger against Saber” (2012) by T. And O. Lytovchenko, “Characternyk” (2019) by V. Shklyar, “The Siege of Bushа” (1894) by M. Starytsky, and “Motrya” from the Mazeppa trilogy (1926) by B. Lepky. Results, novelty: artistic typing of female images in works about the Cossacks of various literary periods from the middle of the XIX century to the first two decades of the XXI century has become in the focus of the research for the first time; the dissertation has improved the theoretical and methodological aspects of the analysis of the types of women in works about the past, definition of the specifics of image creation in the texts of various literary processes; the explanation of the essence of the types of female heroines in the works about the Cossacks has gained further development in the study; the principle of national endogamy in Ukrainian novelistics about the Cossacks has been identified and interpreted for the first time; the type of “woman-warrior” has been identified and justified from the point of view of historical reliability for the first time; the types of women-captives in Ukrainian literature about the Cossacks have been specified for the first time. Scope of application: the materials of the research can be used at the lecture and practical lessons in the Ukrainian literature of the XIX–XXI centuries, as well as for special courses and seminars in Ukrainian literature, elective courses in the Ukrainian literature and in the history of Ukraine at schools.
