Essay

The thesis develops a complex multiaspect approach to the study of semantics and functioning of referentially specialized verbal predicates in Ukrainian, Polish, and English. The organisation of lexico-semantic space of verbs is clarified, and specific conceptual spheres and their cognitive-propositional structures are identified, along with typical situations within a process-and-event sphere. Verbal metonymy types as a factor in seme dynamics and a cause of shift in syntactic are singled out. The functional-onomasiological analysis carried out in the study led to the identification of the spheres of theo-, homo-, phyto-, bestia-, nature-, psycho-, and sociodynamics reflecting object-oriented verbal predicates and the anthropocentric worldview. The research also characterizes verbal predicates based on referential-taxonomic classes of object names where each class represents a certain physical property of the matter. Specific functional features of referentially specialized verbal predicates in Ukrainian, Polish, and English text corpora are singled out. The practical significance of research results lies in developing semantic representation that uses formalised language and is aimed at recording of object properties.
