Essay

The subject matter of the thesis is the elucidation of inversion as a phenomenon of functional-expressive syntax, related to word order and functional sentence perspective within the context of the general communicative-discursive status of speech utterance. It is the first-ever study of the expressive semantics of emotionally and conceptually marked contexts with inversion utilizing a multilevel parametric model of their emphasized elements’ expressivity. Taking into account compensatory features of coreferential interlinguistic pairs representing the same text-semantic invariant, the author establishes strategies of achieving an adequate degree of the emotional expressivity of contexts with stylistically marked sentences contained in these pairs. The research uses the material that includes contexts containing stylistically marked inverted sentences that were selected from the late 19th–20th c. English, American, Ukrainian, and, occasionally, Russian fiction texts as well as their translations in these languages.
