The dissertation is devoted to the development of the scientific foundations of the complex forensic methodology for the investigation of illegal handling of weapons, ammunition, explosives and explosive devices. Are developed, its place in the system of specific methodologies are determined, as well as the structure of forensic characteristics, which includes such elements as the method of commission; object of encroachment; trace picture; the identity of the criminal, taking into account the current state of criminal procedural legislation and law enforcement activities.
The problematic aspects of starting a pre-trial investigation and the circumstances to be established in criminal proceedings regarding the illegal handling of weapons, ammunition, explosives and explosive devices are studied. Typical investigative situations and the main directions of the investigation are highlighted. Possibilities of interaction of the investigator with the employees of the operative units are determined. The specifics of tactical and forensic support for the conduct of individual investigative (search) actions are revealed: inspection, interrogation, search, appointment of expertise.
It is established that the forensic characteristics of illegal handling of weapons, ammunition, explosives and explosive devices include such elements as: the method of committing the crime; object of encroachment; trace picture; the identity of the criminal, which collectively form an information model of the criminal offense, which contributes to the determination of the most appropriate directions of its investigation.
A classification of modern methods of illegal handling of weapons, munitions, explosives and explosive devices is provided, which include preparation measures (choosing or searching for a weapon object; forming an idea about it; searching for sales (sale) channels; determining the method of calculation; choosing the optimal method of movement and route of movement; choice of camouflage means); committing (carrying, storing, purchasing, transferring, selling, manufacturing, repairing) and concealing traces of a criminal offense (concealment; destruction of traces; falsification, removal or alteration of markings on samples; giving knowingly false testimony, creating a false alibi; masking).
