The dissertation comprehensively studied the functioning of ballroom dancing in Soviet Ukraine from the 1950s to the 1980s, considering sociocultural determinations and intrinsically artistic factors; the main strategies of the development of ballroom dance in Ukraine from the 1960s to the 1980s were clarified; a periodization of the development of ballroom dance during the Soviet era was proposed; the main directions of the development of ballroom dance from the 1960s to the 1980s concerning the "Soviet program" were revealed. It is noted that the modern Ukrainian scientific discourse of ballroom choreography is developing dynamically, and shows tendencies to expand the thematic field, but a comprehensive study of the functioning of ballroom dance in Soviet Ukraine from the 1950s to the 1980s has not been executed so far. It was found that ballroom dancing in Soviet times went from complete non-recognition (the 1920s), through a certain weakening of the categorical attitude (1930s to the first half of the 1940s), through the attempts to destroy the Western repertoire of ballroom dancing and creation an exclusively Soviet one (late 1940s to the early 1950s), and in the second half of the 1950s embarked on a path of compromise development, considering the political and ideological attitudes of the state-party nomenclature, which combined the mastery of standardized Western dances and dances of the "Soviet program". It is argued that the perception of ballroom dancing only as an artistic phenomenon, the condemnation of standardization, competitiveness, the introduction of mass simplified forms inhibited the development of ballroom dancing techniques, and caused Ukrainian couples to lag behind Western European couples in performing skills. Coercive state policy about spreading the "Soviet program" encountered a nihilistic attitude towards such a repertoire, the desire to perform standardized ballroom dances of the international program. However, rejecting categoricity, we can also talk about some positive aspects of this program: the possibility of a certain balance between native and foreign dances, expansion of the lexical and figurative range of performers, development of the choreographer's opinion, work on the path of stylization, democratization, the possibility of performing in mass forms, etc. Many peculiar compositions of the "Soviet program", which were created to recognizable music and are easy to perform, successfully implemented a developmental and hedonistic function, especially for children's audiences. It is indicated that the presented dissertation does not claim to be exhaustive; among the promising directions of further scientific research are consideration of the personal development of heads of creative centers of ballroom dance and performers, comparison of the development of ballroom dance in the Ukrainian SSR and other republics of the USSR, identification of the training specifics of the ballroom dance teachers, artistic analysis of performance skills representatives of various regional ballroom dance schools, etc. Keywords: ballroom dance, Soviet Ukraine, ballroom choreography, Soviet ballroom dance program, dance, choreography.
