Essay

The dissertation is devoted to variations of the surface electronic structure on changing the concentration of alkali and alkaline earth adsorbed atoms which is followed by structural phase transitions in adsorbed layers, in particular, to regular trends in the non-metal to metal transition in the alkaline earth (AE) films as their density increases. A new scientific direction, suggested and developed in the dissertation, is the search of possibilities for designing the surfaces with improved electronic characteristics, such as enhanced photoemission and catalytic activity, by means of a complex theoretical-experimental study of the interrelation between electronic and atomic structures of adsorbed films. It has been shown that on changing the electron density by mixing different AE, an effective control of the surface electronic structure can be performed, and an essential enhancement of surface photoemission within a practically important part of the impinging ultraviolet radiation can be obtained.
