Essay

The work is devoted to the solution of the problem of improving the efficiency of metallurgical technologies based on the electroslag process. The integrated investigations resulted in the development of the new electroslag technologies with a separation of processes of melting and solidification, i.e. electroslag technologies using a liquid metal (EST LM) and electroslag remelting of consumable electrode using a two-circuit diagram (ESR TD). The separation of the processes of melting and solidification of metal in ESR makes it possible to create the most favourable conditions at the stage of preparation of metal and at the stage of solidification of billet and to provide feasibility of control of volume and shape of the metal pool within the widest ranges during solidification of billet. Independent control of the processes of melting and solidification of metal makes guarantees in producing finer-grained structure of the billets than that in case of using the traditional EST diagrams. The integrated examinations of the metal quality of billets of EST LM and ESR TD were made, thus making conclusion about the high competitiveness of these processes. Based on the results of integrated theoretical and experimental investigations the fundamentals of the industrial technology were developed and a conception of creation of the industrial equipment of EST LM and ESR TD was suggested.
