Essay

Еlectrical and calcium signalling have been studied in the endothelium in situ. Endothelial cells are connected with each other and with smooth muscle cells by effective electrical contacts. Endothelium-dependent vasodilators evoke а biphasic electrical response of hyperpolarization followed by depolarization. New calcium channels sensitive to the direction of mechanical stimuli have been recorded in the membrane of endothelial cells.
