Essay

The dissertation investigates laws that govern the architectural planning of public centres while searching for national identity in states which experienced times of totalitarian rules. Analogies and differences in the interpretation of national identity in states with different historic background and national cultures are defined with concrete examples taken from the architecture of the public centres of Kyjv, Moscow and Berlin. The two categories "Identity" and "National Identity" are introdused to the scientific branch of architecture and city planning, their concept and definition is worked out as a consequence of law-governed processes in the historic transformation of puplic centres of cities under the influence of political factors. A matrix for adentities and functions of characteristic features of the architecture of public centers based on three appearances in concrete public centers.The dissertation establishes a new directin in the theory of architectre and city planning which takes into account the category "Identity".
